Fine Pitch Test Probes: How to Choose When Test Points Sit Close Together

· EMSGLOB · 5 min read

EMSGLOB fine pitch test probes KRS-035-001CA, KRS-040-002CA, KRS-050-003CA and Series 700 shown side by side with their pitch

From 0.35 mm to 1.27 mm pitch: slim probes for test points that sit close together.

In one lineFine pitch probes are slim spring contacts for densely populated boards and components, where test points sit very close together.

Boards keep getting denser. When test points sit closer together than a standard probe can reach, the fixture needs a slimmer contact that still presses with the right force and travels the right distance. That is the job of a fine pitch probe. Here is where they are used, what the EMSGLOB range covers, and the order in which to check the specifications.

Where fine pitch probes are used

EMSGLOB lists four typical uses for its fine pitch probes:

How to choose: check these in order

  1. Pitch. Start from the centre-to-centre distance between your test points. The range runs from 0.35 mm to 1.27 mm.
  2. Space in the fixture. Check the length available; total lengths across the range run from 3 to 35.9 mm.
  3. Travel and spring force. Check both on the series page for each part number, so the probe keeps contact force under control as the fixture closes.
  4. Current. Make sure the probe is rated for the current the contact must carry. Ratings in the range run from 0.2 A to 7.5 A.
  5. Tip style. Pick a tip that suits the test point.

The series pages list these values for every part number, and the EMSGLOB team can help you shortlist parts.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fine pitch test probe?

A slim spring contact for densely populated boards and components, where test points sit very close together. It lets a fixture reach small centre-to-centre spacings while keeping contact force and travel under control.

Which pitches does the EMSGLOB fine pitch range cover?

EMSGLOB lists 32 series with 224 catalogue part numbers, covering pitches from 0.35 to 1.27 mm, total lengths from 3 to 35.9 mm and rated currents from 0.2 to 7.5 A.

When do I need fine pitch probes instead of standard probes?

When test points are too close for standard 50 mil or 100 mil probes: densely populated PCBs, component and module testing at small centre distances, and semiconductor and package-level test interfaces.

How do I get a quotation?
